NAIC Calls for Multi-State Examination of Anthem

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners has called for a multi-state examination of Anthem, Inc. and its affiliates, following the data breach at the health insurance company.

“Since the news broke, regulators have been working together and have been in discussion with Anthem executives,” said Monica Lindeen, NAIC President and Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, said in a statement. “We are in agreement that an immediate and comprehensive review of the company’s security must be a priority to ensure protection of consumers who are covered by Anthem.”

The NAIC referred Insurance Networking News to its prepared statement when reached for comment. The organization anticipates all 56 states and territories will sign on to the examinations, which will include all subsidiaries and affiliates of Anthem affected by the breach. Indiana, California, Missouri, Maine and New Hampshire are the states with the largest market penetration by Anthem businesses, the association noted.

The organization's recently announced cybersecurity task force will "monitor these efforts, update best practices and determine whether regulatory action is warranted," the company concluded.
