Majority of IT workloads moving from data centers to the cloud

Enterprises will migrate the majority of their IT workloads from the data center to the cloud by 2020, according to a recent study by LogicMonitor, a provider of a performance monitoring platform.

Driving this transition will be the growing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the rapid maturation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies, the report said.

The research, based on a survey of nearly 300 industry influencers, found that in the short term 37 percent of all IT workloads will continue to run predominantly on-premises, and 31 percent will run in the public cloud. However, over the next two years, the percentage of premises-based workloads will decrease to 27 percent and workloads running in the public cloud will grow to 41 percent. The balance will run on private or hybrid clouds.

The survey asked respondents about the key drivers of the transition, and 63 percent cited digital transformation, 62 percent IT agility and 58 percent DevOps. This changes dramatically by 2020, when AI and ML take the lead, followed by IoT.

Respondents expect the cloud market to grow increasingly competitive as Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform gain ground on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
