Property/casualty insurance provider Zurich, which serves markets globally and in North America, today announced the appointment of Mary Merkel as regional chief underwriting officer for Zurich in North America, effective immediately. Merkel replaces Tim Carter, who left the company to pursue another opportunity.

"We are pleased to appoint a leader of Mary's caliber," said Mike Foley, CEO of Zurich North America Commercial and regional chairman of the Americas. "Her experience and industry knowledge position her well to lead the recently formed Zurich in North America Product Underwriting organization."

Merkel joined Zurich in 1982 and has since held a number of key leadership positions, most recently as chief underwriting officer for General Insurance Casualty. Prior to joining Zurich, she served in various underwriting roles at Royal Insurance Company.

Merkel earned a bachelor's degree in Risk Management/Insurance from the University of Illinois and holds a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.
