Sun Life Financial names first EVP of innovation and partnerships

Sun Life Financial has announced Kevin Dougherty as new executive vice president of innovation and partnerships.

Dougherty last served as president of the financial services firm’s Canadian operations. In this newly-created role, he is tasked with accelerating the company's technological prowess in digital health, data analytics and artificial intelligence. Dougherty will also lead the formation of all external partnerships at Sun Life—leveraging existing business relationships with Plug and Play and MaRS Discovery—and oversee the carrier’s insurance research lab, the company says.

"Kevin has consistently demonstrated a unique ability to create new business models where none existed,” said Dean Connor, president and CEO, Sun Life Financial, in a statement. "Putting a leader of Kevin's caliber against our innovation and partnership agenda speaks to our commitment to creating meaningful differentiation in the marketplace, and for clients."

Sun Life also announced the appointment of Jacques Goulet as Dougherty’s replacement, joining the Toronto-based company from Mercer. As president of Sun Life Canada, he will run the division's group benefits, group retirement services, individual wealth and insurance investment management businesses.

Dougherty and Goulet will report to Connor and become members of the Sun Life’s executive team. Both start their new roles on Jan. 15.
