The Hartford has named David Firstenberg as chief underwriting officer of its P&C business, reporting directly to company President Doug Elliot.

Firstenberg is tasked with overseeing the underwriting practices of The Hartford’s small commercial, specialty commercial, middle market and personal lines businesses—while improving product development and risk assessment for each, the carrier says.

Prior to joining The Hartford, Firstenberg served as president and CEO of Canal Insurance Company. Other notable career stops include time at The Hanover and Chubb as president of commercial lines and VP of underwriting and marketing, respectively. He now replaces Mo Tooker, recently named head of the multi-line insurer’s middle market segment, after two years on the job.

“With more than 20 years of executive experience in the P&C industry, David is an accomplished and admired leader,” said Elliot, in a statement. “David’s deep knowledge and experience will be instrumental as we continue to expand our risk appetite in new and evolving markets.”
