Benmosche May Stay

If his health permits him to do so, American International Group CEO Robert Benmosche is open to remaining with the insurance giant past 2012.

Benmosche, who was diagnosed with cancer last year, said in an interview with Reuters that he was happy with what he was doing, and would assess his employment situation with the company’s board next year. Previously, he had announced in late January that he will stay on at AIG at least until 2012.

While continuing to take medicine to control his cancer, the article noted that Benmosche, 66, appears in robust health, and still jogs 15 to 20 miles per week.

Since emerging from retirement to take the helm at AIG in August 2009, Benmosche has orchestrated a turnaround at the firm, divesting assets and advancing a plan to repay government assistance received during the financial crisis ahead of schedule. Benmosche also weathered disagreements with the company’s board over direction and executive compensation.

Elsewhere, Cesare Geronzi, chairman of Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A., was unable to overcome differences with that company’s board and has resigned.

According to Reuters, Geronzi, who was appointed in April 2010 as a non-executive chairman of Europe's third-largest insurer, had clashed with fellow directors in the last few months.
