Organizations that use BI show increased levels of maturity – up 5.7% from 2009 – but there’s still far to go, according to this year’s Global BI Maturity Online Survey from Forrester Research.
For “BI Maturity In The Enterprise: 2010 Update,” Forrester surveyed 173 technology professionals familiar with their respective organization’s BI efforts.
Compared with the previous year, 2010 findings show fewer organizations centralizing BI, with 43% employing agile BI and BI self-service, and 38% using centralization and consolidation. Forrester also found that only 35% of organizations are employing pervasive BI, which is defined as enterprise BI applications being available to most strategic and operational decision-makers.
BI talent and skills acquisition also leave much room for improvement, with 46% of respondents in this Forrester study expressing dissatisfaction with procedures to hire, train and retain skilled BI staff.
Forrester calls modern, scalable BI technologies the “bright spots” in enterprise BI maturity, where reporting times were deemed acceptable by 43% of respondents, and 56% found their organizations’ data refresh latency to be satisfactory.
“Traditional BI approaches, processes, technologies and architectures are no longer enough to continue to drive higher levels of BI adoption and increase BI maturity in enterprises,” says Boris Evelson, principal analyst at Forrester Research. “New approaches such as agile BI and BI self service by the business users are needed to supplement traditional BI.”
Forrester offers a BI maturity assessment tool for organizational evaluation.
