Insurers, Vendors Named to FORTUNE's List of 100 Best Places to Work

In spite of the struggles in recent years wreaking havoc on the insurance and financial services industries, they remain an excellent source of employment for many people. FORTUNE recently released its annual list of "100 Best Companies to Work For," which contained a handful of insurers and vendors and consultants that play in the insurance space.

The top-rated carrier on this year's list is San Antonio-based USAA, which provides a full range of financial services to member of the U.S. military and their families. USAA shot up FORTUNE's list this year, rising to No. 17 from No. 45 in 2010.

Oklahoma City-based American Fidelity Assurance was the second insurer to appear on the list, coming in at No. 39. The family-owned carrier fell four spots from last year's list.

The only other insurer rated this year is Columbus, Ga.-based Aflac, which fell 20 spots to No. 57 on the list. Aflac has made the list now for 13 straight years.

"We are proud that Aflac is the only insurance company to appear for 13 consecutive years on FORTUNE's list of Best Places to Work For," Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos said in a statement. "This unique milestone illustrates a workplace consistency that is hard to find at many companies. It is a tribute to our belief that if you take care of your employees, they will take care of the business."

As for companies that provide software or services to the insurance industry, predictive analytics vendor SAS, Cary, N.C., topped FORTUNE's list for the second straight year.

Some of the other companies that routinely provide solutions to insurers to make the list were Salesforce.com, which lost nine spots this year, ranked No. 52. Microsoft fell 21 places to No. 72, while Accenture stayed on the list despite dropping to No. 99.

The full list and related stories appear in the February issue of FORTUNE magazine, which will be available on newsstands on Monday, January 24. To view the full list online, click here.
