A recent survey sheds some light on what are the safest cars for new drivers. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, teenagers in small cars are more than twice as likely to file a claim as people between the ages of 35 and 50 in similar cars. Additionally, teen drivers in mid-size sports cars are 2.6 times as likely to file a claim than people between the ages of 35 and 50 in similar cars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently found that teens are more likely to drive smaller, older cars. Cars such as these often can lack certain safety equipment, such as stability control and side airbags, which increases the probability of accidents and injury. What's more, 83 percent of people who bought a vehicle for their teenagers said they bought it used, according to a phone survey conducted for the institutes. In response to these findings, the institutes have compiled a list of used vehicles that meet important safety criteria for teen drivers. "A teenager's first car is more than just a financial decision," said Adrian Lund, IIHS president. "These lists of recommended used vehicles can help consumers factor in safety, in addition to affordability." Follow along to learn what are the 10 safest used, mid-size cars for teen drivers.
