6 Universities at the Forefront of BI and Data Management

As the fall semester gets underway, here are six colleges and universities earning high marks for their advanced approaches to the evolving career landscape and workplace expectations with business intelligence, analytics, data management and more. In the last year, these U.S. universities have tuned up their computer science curricula or rolled out new, cutting-edge learning opportunities to prep the wave of data managers.
New York University
NYU has made innovation an academic focus of its new masters degree in business analytics, which will be the flagship program at its new campus under construction in Shanghai, China. Professors are putting the finishing touches on a degree that puts teams of graduate students together to create data models with consideration for data management basics and ethical concerns over data privacy.
California Institute of Technology
A tech university may not seem like a stretch of a choice, but this year Caltech introduced a free machine learning course, not unlike other successful offerings from nearby Stanford University. Caltech professor Yaser S. Abu-Mostafa has delivered 18 lectures on topics such as training versus testing, kernel methods and bias-variance tradeoff.
Austin Peay State University
Along with breaking ground on a new math and computer science building at its Tennessee campus, Austin Peay continued to construct on its real-world analytics and BI teachings with a new program in mobile software and an added minor in Web technology.
University of Rochester
At the universitys Simon Graduate School of Business, teams recently put a famous supercomputer to the test. The analytics capabilities behind Watson, the IBM data crunching TV quiz show whiz, were used by students in models to track inclement weather and ease congested airport traffic.
Eddy Perez
Louisiana State University
After a pilot degree program last year that landed graduates in top jobs, LSU is going full bore with its master of science in analytics. The coursework is geared toward actual enterprise challenges with large and unstructured data sets, and is offered in collaboration with SAS analytics education efforts.
Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellons Heinz College takes the well-rounded approach with its information systems management masters degree. Including concentrations in BI and analytics, the program from the esteemed tech school touches on modeling, GIS, reporting, visualizations and segmentation analysis. The university also features a certification program for government CIOs.
