A look inside MassMutual's data science lab

In the leafy college town of Amherst, Mass., several miles from the company's headquarters in Springfield, MassMutual's data science lab inhabits cozy quarters on the first level of a mixed-use development off the college town's bookstore- and coffee shop-lined main street.
MassMutual is going for a startup feel for its data science lab to attract young professionals in the field. That means lots of whiteboards. Some of them have sensitive information on them, but we're pretty sure this doodle of the Pokemon Metapod doesn't count.
Collaborative areas abound, with their own whiteboard tables.
Even the kitchen cabinets can be doodled on.
A typical data science team consists of two members of the MassMutual data science development program, who work on insurance projects while pursuing higher education, as well as two full-time MassMutual employees. The workspace is open, with few walls between associates.
