Hortonworks unveils service to help enterprises better manage, secure data

Hortonworks announced this week a new cloud-based service to help large enterprises centrally control, integrate and protect their data resources.

Called Hortonworks DataPlane Service, or Hortonworks DPS, the offering is made up of a shared set of core capabilities and extensible services, including:

  • A catalog of available governance and security services. It also comes with the functionality to create new services that can extend the DPS platform. The initial service offered with DPS is the Data Lifecycle Manager, which the company says simplifies the moving, replication and backing up of data.
  • An integration layer that allows DPS to understand data in external sources. It includes the Apache Atlas data governance framework and the Apache Ranger security platform.

DPS enables enterprises running Hadoop and other distributed computing environments to better manage data and workloads and apply security and governance policies consistently, said Arun Murthy, Hortonworks’ co-founder and chief products officer.

Since DPS is based on open source technology, other platforms can be plugged in. The company said IBM will integrate its Unified Governance Platform into DPS.

DPS offers a number of features that should appeal to data professionals, Hortonworks says. For data stewards, it helps boost data quality and removes redundancies across data assets. For data engineers, it supports moving, backing up and restoring data. And for data scientists and analysts, it enables a better understanding of cross-source lineage and allows the application of various models to data regardless of where the information is housed.

With large corporations storing data in various forms, in a range of repositories and in different locations around the word, a service like Hortonworks DPS “is what’s needed today,” said Forrester principal analyst Noel Yuhanna, who specializes in enterprise architecture.

Hortonworks said the service would be generally available at the end of October. The company did not release pricing information.
