3 Top Turkey Fire States

State Farm Insurance has put a new spin on why people living in the United States should be grateful this Thanksgiving—they are less likely to be burned or have their homes catch fire as a result of cooking a turkey.

But if you live in Texas, Illinois or Ohio, scratch that. According to claims data from State Farm, you’re more likely to experience a cooking fire on Thanksgiving Day than in any other states.

State Farm says that, overall, more cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. In fact, grease and cooking-related claims more than double on Thanksgiving Day compared to an average day in November, says the insurer.

This year, the popularity of turkey frying is on an upswing, putting more people and property at risk for fryer related fires and injuries.

U.S. fire departments are responding to more than 1,000 fires each year in which a deep fryer is involved reports the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Deep fryer fires result in more than $15 million in property damage each year and hot oil splatter can cause serious burns to an adult or life threatening injuries to a child, says the group.

According to State Farm Insurance claims data, the top 10 states for grease and cooking-related claims on Thanksgiving Day (2005-2010) are as follows:

1. Texas

2. Illinois

3. Ohio

4. New York

5. Pennsylvania

6. Michigan

7. Florida

8. Minnesota

9. Indiana

10. Louisiana
