Fireman’s says text messaging to personal cell phones is an excellent way to stay in touch during a disaster, especially if the power goes out or homeowners are forced to evacuate. It is easy, fast and can be more reliable than land-based telephone services, when disasters strike, the insurer says.

Fireman’s policyholders and agents can select a region from a U.S. map, which is divided into 11 regions. Policyholders who frequently travel, have multiple residences, or have businesses in different parts of the country may be interested in signing up to receive texts in more than one region, Fireman’s notes.
