Humana looks to bolster digital health, analytics with new center

Humana, one of the country’s largest healthcare insurance companies, plans to bolster its digital health and analytics capabilities with a new development center located in Boston’s Seaport neighborhood.

The move is the latest by several of the nation’s largest healthcare organizations looking to incorporate digital technology to improve healthcare delivery for patients.

The Louisville, Ky.-based insurer announced on Monday that the Boston center—called Humana Studio H—will be staffed by as many as 250 employees within the next five years, focusing on developing new products and services for use across the organization.

According to the announcement, Humana has entered into a lease agreement for approximately 40,000 square feet of office space that will incorporate an open floor plan designed to promote interaction and collaboration—renovations are expected to be completed next summer.

In addition, a team at Studio H will be dedicated to creating a new health experience for seniors.

“What we’re developing in Boston is a critical capability that can help Humana leap forward and overcome friction points to create a simplified, connected and personalized healthcare experience for our members and the physicians and others who provide their care,” says Humana President and CEO Bruce Broussard. “We understand that where lifestyle and healthcare intersect, there is an opportunity to influence health and well being in a holistic way—especially for seniors.”

Humana selected Boston’s Seaport neighborhood as the location for Studio H to take advantage of the area’s “wealth of talent in digital technology, analytics and experience design,” according to the company.

Heather Cox, who most recently served as chief technology and digital officer at USAA, has been appointed Humana’s chief digital health and analytics officer—a new position for the insurer, reporting directly to Broussard.

“Digital technology and analytics are building blocks for devising products, tools and services that deliver on the promise of whole-person healthcare, and Heather Cox has the experience, vision and drive to innovate and boldly lead Humana’s efforts in these important areas,” Broussard adds.
