State Auto has selected Cambridge Mobile Telematics to develop a mobile application for a usage-based insurance program.

Cambridge's Drivewell technology, which pairs a mobile application and a digital tag, will underpin the initiative. Trip data is passed to the vendor’s data science and analytics engines, which generate personalized feedback for drivers. About one million drivers currently use a Cambridge-powered program across the company's insurer clients; the latest one to sign on before State Auto was Aloy Nissay Dowa.

“We want our drivers to be as safe and informed as possible – which made deploying a behavior-based telematics program a top priority,” said Kim Garland, SVP of Standard Lines at State Auto and Director of State Auto Labs, the company's innovation lab. “We look forward to working with CMT to deliver an experience that leads to safer drivers, and safer roads."

There was no immediate indication if the new program would retain the branding of State Auto's existing telematics/usage-based insurance program, Safety 360. That product uses a more traditional OBD-II device, but also has an app. The technology provider on it is Octo Telematics.
