Aetna Names Mathias CIO

Health insurer Aetna announced today that it appointed Michael Mathias as its newest VP and CIO. He will report to EVP Meg McCarthy.

In his new role, Mathias will have oversight of AIS delivery, strategy, operations, technology and architecture, and will be charged with leading innovation efforts and implementing Aetna’s long-term technology strategy.

“Aetna recognizes that the landscape of health care is changing and that technology will play an ever-increasing role in the future,” says McCarthy. “Michael Mathias is highly regarded in the industry for his strong technical knowledge and he has the skills and health care experience to lead Aetna Information Services (AIS) going forward. Michael and I have worked very closely for the past several years, and I am delighted that he has agreed to take on this new role.”

Mathias previously served as Aetna’s chief technology officer since 2008, and was head of AIS Enterprise Architecture from 2006 to 2008. In these roles, he was responsible for aligning Aetna’s technology vision with business strategy by integrating company processes with the appropriate technologies. He is recognized in the IT industry for his knowledge of database, middleware and Web technologies, including their strategic implementations, the company says.

Mathias joined Aetna in 1993 as a systems engineering manager, taking on increasingly responsible roles over time. Earlier in his career, he served in various managerial, technical and application development capacities with UBS/PaineWebber Inc., Verizon, Educational Testing Service, Macmillan Publishing and Prudential Insurance.
