AIG Employees to Swap BlackBerrys for New IPhones

(Bloomberg) -- American International Group Inc. employees are getting an upgrade.

The insurer is switching employees’ phones from BlackBerry Ltd. devices to Apple Inc.’s iPhones, according to a memo from Chief Executive Officer Peter Hancock that also discusses fourth-quarter results. AIG had 64,000 employees at the end of 2013, and the memo doesn’t say how many will get the new phones.

The swap is part of an effort to upgrade technology that also includes new e-mail software and stronger security. Hancock, 56, has been working to improve AIG’s use of technology to assessinsurance risks and reduce costs. He hired Philip Fasano last year from Kaiser Permanente to the new role of chief information officer.

“A lot of strategic work is being done in IT to improve our technology infrastructure,” Hancock wrote. “At an end-user level, many of you are seeing tangible changes.”
