Blue Cross & Blue Shield Rhode Island Expands E-Prescribing

Indianapolis — Blue Cross & Blue Shield Rhode Island (BCBSRI) has inked a deal with WellPoint NextRx, an independent pharmacy benefit management (PBM) company and a division of Indianapolis-based WellPoint, Inc., to offer the SureScripts-RxHub to physicians in Rhode Island.

The deal is part of BCBSRI's ongoing efforts to encourage adoption and use of electronic health records by physicians. Before an authorized physician or provider prepares an e-prescription for a BCBSRI member, with patient consent, immediate eligibility and formulary information will be provided from NextRx. In addition, medication history can also be provided to physicians during the prescribing process.

"We are making every effort to promote the adoption and use of electronic health records by Rhode Island physicians," says Jim Purcell, president and CEO, BCBSRI. "We believe that making e-prescribing easier will further encourage its use, which will directly benefit our members."

In 2006, the state of Rhode Island finished first in the nation as part of the first-ever nationwide ranking of electronic prescribing activity, earning the state the SafeRx Award.
