Blue Shield of California will identify on its Web site physicians in the state who score above average in up to eight quality measures.

Beginning June 1, these physicians will have a blue ribbon icon on their Blue Shield online profile at The Blues plan is a member of the California Cooperative Healthcare Reporting Initiative, comprising purchasers, consumers, insurers and physicians. The cooperative aggregates claims data covering more than five million patients and 63,000 physicians, and has measured the performance of 13,000 high-volume physicians.

The physician-rating program is based solely on quality data and does not consider cost of care. Rated physicians received preliminary quality results and were given an opportunity to correct any deficiencies. They were taken at their word and data was corrected when requested.
