With coverage subsidies set to run out on December 31, the House passed an extension for those receiving benefits under the Consolidates Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA).

The extension was added as a resolution attached to HR 3326, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2010, which passed by a vote of 394-34. The $13 billion provision extends the 65% subsidy for COBRA premiums from nine to 15 months and extends eligibility for those who lose their jobs through Feb. 28, 2010. Roughly three million people are receiving benefits under COBRA.

The COBRA extension resolution was inserted into the defense bill after a separate bill sponsored by Rep. Joe Sestak, (D-Pa.), the Extended COBRA Continuation Protection Act of 2009 (H.R. 3930), stalled in committee.

The Senate is expected to take up the issue of COBRA extension next week.
