Gartner analysts revealed mobile technology and social media strategies as keys to future IT planning at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2010 this week, which wrapped up in Cannes last week.
The IT industry will reach nearly $3.5 trillion in revenue by 2011, Gartner said, and analysts discussed several issues that CIOs need to begin addressing.
According to Gartner analyst recommendations, social media and mobile devices should be top of mind for enterprises. In 2012, the Internet will be 75 times larger than it was in 2002, Gartner predicted. Stephen Prentice, vice president and Gartner fellow, compared Facebook to a country, saying it would be the third largest in the world after China and India. Today, online communities and mobile users are altering the business landscape. Understanding these communities, the personas of their members and their expectations, aspirations and how to interact with them are becoming critical for business, according to Gartner.
“By 2020, everything is connected. The more than 60 billion smart devices that connect to the Internet today will have grown to several hundred billion,” Prentice predicts. “More than two-thirds of the world’s population will be talking on the Web, and more than 50% will be using social media talking about everything.”
Gartner research found that through 2015, 80% of organizations will lack a coherent approach for dealing with information from the collective. Gartner recommends CIOs begin planning strategies for these issues as soon as possible. Other Gartner predictions include worldwide cloud services revenue (including public and private) forecasts to reach $148.8 billion in 2014 and sustainability as the fastest-growing enterprise compliance expense worldwide by 2016.
