Mobile app usage while driving is down but more than half of drivers, 64%, admitted to using apps while driving in 2024, according to Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT).

The 2024 Most-Used Apps Behind the Wheel from CMT suggests Google and the Camera app are the most-used while driving. Google was used by 21.9% of drivers. The Camera app was used by 20.8% of drivers. CMT surveyed 1,700 drivers asking those who admitted to using their phones while driving what apps they used. Gen Z drivers used FaceTime most when driving.

William V. Powers, co-founder and CEO of CMT, said in a statement: "Fewer drivers say they're using their phones—that's a step forward. But with surprising findings like FaceTiming while driving, it's clear there's still a lot of hard work to do."

The report highlights that drivers have moved away from passive scrolling to purposeful interactions. Gaming and social networking usage were down in 2024 and the use of utility and AI apps increased. The report suggests that a rise in AI and voice-focused features could mean more phone interactions will become hands-free.

While younger drivers do report using their phone while driving, more adults, specifically 30 to 44 year olds, reported the highest phone usage while driving.

Powers added: "This report challenges long-held assumptions about distracted driving. It gives us a clearer view of how behaviors are shifting and where new risks are emerging. As we build the next generation of mobility, industry leaders need to keep these behaviors in mind to create not just safer roads, but safer drivers as well."
