IIHS Names Durango “Top Safety Pick”

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) declared the Dodge Durango a “Top Safety Pick” for 2011, making it one of eight Chrysler models designated a “Top Safety Pick” overall.

Applicable to models built after May 2011, the Dodge Durango implements technological advances to offer 45 safety and security features, aiding drivers in vulnerable situations as well as keeping drivers safe when accidents occur.

"The performance of the Durango means buyers are getting the best protection in the most common kinds of crashes, and electronic stability control for avoiding many crashes altogether," IIHS President Adrian Lund said.

Electronic stability control (ESC) is a requirement for consideration of the “Top Safety Pick” award, as research has proven its effectiveness in reducing the risk of crashes. ESC improves stability for both on- and off-road driving through three features: electronic roll mitigation, Hill-start Assist and Trailer-sway Control. Also in an effort to help drivers identify and avoid dangerous situations, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross path systems expose blind spots notorious for leaving drivers unaware of their surroundings.

The IIHS also looks at front, side, rollover and rear crash test evaluations. As such, all eight Chrysler models recognized by IIHS employ a two-part safety system in addition to ESC, including active head restraints, standard anti-lock brakes with four wheel disc brakes and supplemental side airbags.

Other Chrysler vehicles previously awarded the honor in 2011 are the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Chrysler 300, the Dodge Charger.
