Insurers Name New Tech Executives

Boston, Mass. – Insurers around the country are making changes to their technology areas with the naming of new executives. Three such examples are Liberty Mutual Group, The Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America and NYMagic.James McGlennon has been appointed vice president and CIO for Liberty Mutual Agency Markets, a strategic business unit of Boston-based Liberty Mutual Group that consists of property/casualty and specialty insurance carriers that distribute their products and services primarily through independent agents and brokers.

In this role, McGlennon is responsible for the overall information technology and architecture of Agency Markets and will work to ensure successful strategic delivery of the business unit's processes and technology initiatives.

McGlennon will oversee strategy, planning, application development, maintenance and support of the Agency Markets technology portfolio, including the implementation of high-value business improvements, additional flexible rating solutions, and enhanced agent and customer facing capabilities. McGlennon will report to Liberty Mutual Group's senior vice president and CIO, Stuart McGuigan.

Prior to joining Liberty Mutual Agency Markets, McGlennon oversaw architecture and development as vice president of Atlanta-based BellSouth Corp. There, he was responsible for all phases of software development for the company's domestic communications business, which consists of a portfolio of more than 1,000 systems. He has extensive experience in numerous areas of IT, including global delivery team management, program management, data warehousing and business intelligence, as well as software development process improvement and governance.

McGlennon has also held senior technology positions with Fleet Financial Corp., Computer Science Corp. and Digital Equipment Corp.

The Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America, New York, promoted Frank Wander to senior vice president, CIO. He will be responsible for the delivery of technology-based services and solutions across all Guardian divisions.

Prior to assuming this role, Wander served as CIO of Guardian's Group Insurance division, supporting all business systems for its dental, medical, life and disability insurance products. Before joining Guardian he was CIO of Prudential Institutional, COO of an Internet start-up and held leadership roles at Merrill Lynch.

In April, Crag Lowenthal was appointed senior vice president and chief information officer at NYMagic, a New York insurance holding company whose P&C insurance subsidiaries specialize in writing ocean marine, inland marine and non-marine liability insurance. With 19 years of experience, Lowenthal previously was the managing principal and chief information officer for New York-based Integro Insurance Brokers. Prior to Integro, Lowenthal was with Hartford Financial Products, a unit of The Hartford, where he was vice president and chief information officer.
