The rising number of connected devices is multiplying the probability of cyber attacks on companies across sectors, according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan. This is compelling organizations to deploy security technologies in order to protect computing resources, information, networks and applications.

Innovations in security will be aimed at fortifying cloud services, big data, wireless communication and the Internet of Things (IoT), says the study, “Impact of Cybersecurity Innovations in Key Sectors.” It finds that in addition to comprehensive security solutions, the trend toward developing various layers of cyber security for attacks aimed at specific network layers has gathered steam. Securing perimeter, network, endpoint, application and data is particularly vital due to the emergence of new threats on specific targets.

“The deployment of IoT, especially, will open up innumerable attack surfaces for cyber attackers to leverage,” Debarun Guha Thakurta, technical insights research analyst at Frost & Sullivan, said in a statement. “As a result, endpoint and wireless network security for IoT will leap to the forefront of technology development and wide-scale adoption.”

Security vendors are focusing on vulnerability assessment in addition to traditional security features, the report says. With most cyber security solutions only able to identify an attack after considerable damage has been done, it’s essential to spot and nullify threats at the point of inception.

Maintaining a balance between protection and monitoring is essential in order to recognize emerging types of attacks, the firm says. Ensuring cognitive security while modeling security measures in alignment with each layer of security will help fight against unknown zero-day attacks.
