Pay-per-mile insurer Metromile has announced the launch of a new AI claims system designed to eliminate manual processes used to collect accident data and distribute payments to customers.
The automated platform is powered by “AVA,” a smart claims assistant that leverages telematics information retrieved through Metromile’s Pulse device and images sent by customers to replicate accidents. If verified, the AI bot approves the claim and notifies policyholders in seconds, helping them bypass paper forms and physical inspections, according to the company. Submitted claims flagged for further review by AVA are sent to Metromile’s claims team for investigation.
“Instead of relying on traditionally complex processes to handle customers' claims, our machine learning platform removes the friction associated with getting your car back as soon as possible,” said Dan Preston, CEO of Metromile, in a statement. “The future of insurance is frictionless and fairly priced, which is all enabled by smart use of data.”
At launch, AVA will be available for certain kinds of claims only, Metromile says. However, it expects to roll out expanded features for its AI in the coming months, including full payment capabilities and vehicle repair appointment scheduling. The insurer currently has a team of data scientists working on machine learning technology to develop these skills.
"AVA enables us to automate traditional claims handling tasks, allowing our adjusters to do what they do best, service our customers," Preston added.
Last September, Metromile secured $192 million in Series D funding and acquired Mosaic Insurance, propelling the company from MGA to full-fledged carrier. Since the announcement, the auto insurer has also brought its claims operations in-house and released an online first-notice-of-loss platform (FNOL).
Metromile is currently available in seven states, including Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and its home state of California.
