Unitrin Successfully Migrates Legacy Policy Admin System

Homeowner and auto insurance supplier Unitrin Direct completed the move of its policy administration system from a mainframe system to a Microsoft Windows platform with help from Decision Research Corp. (DRC).

“In today’s insurance environment, migrating legacy systems to new, flexible technologies is essential to transforming the  customer experience,” said Bill Hartnett, director of U.S. insurance industry solutions, Microsoft Corp. “Working with partners like DRC, Microsoft is proud to help insurers migrate information from legacy tools to modern systems for greater agility and access, and better return on their IT dollar.”

DRC said the transfer of applications to Windows format was completed in eight months.

“Using DRC’s technical resources in addition to our internal staff, we were able to migrate an acquired book of business off a mainframe within 1 year of acquiring the system,” said John Elcock, VP and CIO, Unitrin Direct. “DRC resources have considerable insurance knowledge in addition to their technical capabilities. Partnering with them on the migration enabled us to start this project sooner than originally anticipated. As a result of this migration, Unitrin will realize considerable cost savings this year and in the future.”
