Berkshire Hathaway was listed fifth overall on the 2013 Fortune 500; Berkshire was the top-listed insurer out of the 46 that appeared overall. Eleven insurers landed in the top 100. In 2012, 14 insurers were in the top 100, and 46 were listed among the Fortune 500.
Ahead of Berkshire, the top four spots overall this year went to Wal-Mart, Exxon Mobil, Chevron and Philips 66, respectively.
For the previous two years, Berkshire had been listed seventh. UnitedHealth Group jumped five spots, and Prudential, the third-highest listed insurer, experienced an even larger jump, from 55 in 2012 to 29 in 2013. AIG slipped for the third year in a row.
While the overall number stayed the same, Amerigroup dropped off the list (385 last year) and Old Republic joined it.
