A4 Health Systems Integrates Saflink Technology

BELLEVUE, WA - SAFLINK Corporation, a leading developer, marketer and integrator of biometric security solutions, announced today that North Carolina-based A4  Health Systems has used SAFLINK's Software Development Kit (SDK) to design and deploy a solution in its efforts to meet new security requirements in Ohio that call for dual authentication of pharmaceutical orders within the hospital setting.  The first phase of the solution is scheduled for deployment to more than 500 users at Mount Carmel East, West, and St. Ann's of Columbus, Ohio.

The SDK facilitated the tight integration of SAFLINK's off-the-shelf product, SAFremote Authenticator, a product that enables biometric sign-on for secure roaming sessions and remote access to network resources within the Citrix MetaFrame and Citrix NFuse environments, with A4 's HealthMatics ED Emergency Department Information System. A4 plans to integrate SAFLINK's SDK into all of its remaining HealthMatics electronic medical record solutions later this year.

The joint product's initial deployment is slated for three emergency departments within Mount Carmel, and is designed to help the hospital meet the new security requirements of the Ohio State law.  It also boosts the healthcare provider's ability to comply with patient data security initiatives mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) by replacing costly and insecure passwords with fingerprint authentication, which virtually guarantees an individual's identity.

"SAFLINK's SDK allows us to incorporate a leading biometrics-based authentication solution into our HealthMatics products," said Stephen M. Ura, vice president and CTO for A4 Health Systems.  "This solution not only helps our customers achieve regulatory compliance with HIPAA, but it also it also allows them to securely extend network resources to users at remote workstations and provide an audit trail of this activity."

The SDK is the first offering from SAFLINK that enables third-party developers to utilize the same proven biometric authentication tools currently at work in large enterprises and governmental facilities. It has also been integrated into industry-leading software applications from companies such as Adobe and Oracle.

"Our SDK enables leading solutions partners such as A4 Health Systems to remove passwords as a security threat to sensitive applications," said Greg Jensen, CTO of SAFLINK.  "When linked with SAFremote Authenticator, it can provide a simple, secure, and cost-effective way for users to remotely access network applications via a fingerprint or iris scan - increasing security while eliminating the inconvenience of passwords."
