While engineers of all backgrounds continue to be in high demand, a new salary study by Winter Wyman Search reveals that big data engineers are especially prized.
According to the Boston-based recruiting firm, it has filled 620 engineering-related positions over the past 12 months, and that of data engineer has far surpassed other positions in terms of salary potential. In fact, salaries for big data engineers can be as much as $15,000 higher than that of UI engineers or $27,000 higher than that earned by software engineers.
Much of that is due to the fact that big data engineers are a small segment of the engineering workforce, as compared to software engineers (79 percent of job demand) or UI engineers (21 percent of job demand).
Winter Wyman is also quick to point out that possessing a specific skillset can quickly separate one candidate from another, as does the industry in which a candidate has experience. Viewed in that light, salary ranges can vary significantly: $70,000 to $170,000 for a software engineer; $90,000 to $155,000 for a UN engineer; and $125,000 to $155,000 for a big data engineer.
Overall, Winter Wyman says the job market has remained fairly steady for tech engineers over the past 12 months.
“The number of companies looking for software engineers – regardless of language – increased slightly, according to our data. The other two categories declined slightly in terms of the raw number of job orders, but the dips aren’t considered significant,” the company noted.
