CIGNA First National Health Plan to Earn Accreditation from NCQA

CIGNA received the distinction today of being the first national health plan to earn the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) new quality rating for its health and wellness programs. NCQA is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality.

The Wellness & Health Promotion Accreditation—“Accredited With Performance Reporting”—is effective for three years, and applies to CIGNA's range of  health and wellness programs, including: Health Advisor; Personal Health Team and Integrated Personal Health Team; lifestyle management programs; health assessment; online health coaching programs; and employer health promotion and wellness consultation services.

CIGNA had to submit its health and wellness programs to a comprehensive evaluation in oder to earn the accreditation. NCQA rated the insurer on a number of criteria, including how its wellness programs are implemented in the workplace, how services such as health coaching are provided to help eligible individuals develop skills to make healthy choices and how health information of eligible individuals is properly safeguarded.

“NCQA’s Wellness & Health Promotion Accreditation requires organizations to demonstrate their compliance with well defined standards and quality measures,” said Margaret O’Kane, NCQA president. “The NCQA seal will provide employers and consumers with the information they need to choose the best program in their markets.”

“We’re gratified to earn this recognition from NCQA,” said Dr. Scott Josephs, CIGNA's national medical officer for clinical operations. “This NCQA ‘seal of approval’ certifies that CIGNA’s health and wellness programs meet exacting standards and have undergone a nationally recognized evaluation. Employers and individuals alike can select CIGNA health and wellness programs with confidence.”
