Executive Moves at CNA Aimed at Improved Underwriting Performance

CNA Financial Corporation, the country's eight largest commercial insurance writer, has made three new executive appointments as part of its broader efforts to optimize the performance of its underwriting operations.

Two of the appointments, Mark Kaufman and Michael Shane, are new SVPs of the company’s actuarial functions.  Kaufman is assuming leadership of Actuarial Pricing for Specialty Insurance at CAN and will report directly to Mark Herman, President and COO of CNA’s Specialty business line.  He came to CNA from XL, where he was chief actuary for Global Professional lines.  Shane was named SVP of Reserving and will serve as the appointed actuary for CNA’s U.S. and Bermuda subsidiaries.

"Actuarial pricing is critical to the overall performance of underwriting, and our strategy has been to align those resources and organize expertise more directly to the business decision makers," said Tom Motamed, chairman and chief executive officer, CNA.

The third appointment, David DeVinney, was named Commercial Underwriting Officer for Long Island, Hartford and Westchester Branches.  DeVinney will be responsible for the growth of CNA's Commercial Lines portfolio in the region and for improving the responsiveness with which CNA serves its regional agents and brokers.
