Frederick Mutual, a more than century-old insurer, was looking to expand out of its home state of Maryland at the turn of the decade. Nancy Newmister, appointed CEO of the company in 2016, knew that in order to do so, the company would have to implement a new policy administration system that would help it achieve its goals.

Enter BriteCore, which offers a cloud-based platform that modernized the experience inside the carrier and for its agents and customers. Frederick Mutual was able to expand into four states and the District of Columbia within two years.

"We were able to put over 20 lines in multiple states and get those products built and out into the marketplace," Newmister says. "On top of that, we incorporated technologies that help us differentiate ourselves into the marketplace."

Now, BriteCore is launching an advanced, re-architected version of its platform into the market at large for small and mid-sized insurers like Frederick Mutual. The company says that its new features include e-signature, in partnership with DocuSign. It also has worked to make more robust reporting available to stakeholders throughout the insurance organization, leveraging an in-memory engine from Amazon Web Services.

"It's a very rich analytics and reporting environment that we're introducing as part of this platform launch, and it's built around the notion of executive dashboards and personas within the carrier," says Ray Villeneuve, CEO for BriteCore. "Everyone from the CEO or president of the company – like Nancy – [to] the top finance person, the top top person running claims, the top underwriter – they all have their views of their workflow."

A suite of APIs allows insurers to integrate other digital partners directly into BriteCore. Newmister says her company has leveraged this for contract templates from the company Epoq, as well as IVANS Download and Verisk PL Rating for agents.

But perhaps more acutely helpful for Frederick Mutual as it moves into its next phase is that BriteCore's cloud-based platform supports the company's move to a hybrid work environment.

"We're not going back to being in an office," she says. "Having BriteCore, with technology in the cloud, along with the intersection of mass printing and the policy holder applications, is important."
