GIS Celebrates 40 Years, Credits Insurance Industry

Chapin, S.C. - With roots in the insurance industry, General Information Services Inc. (GIS) claims to be one of the two original providers of nationwide background investigations.

As the Chapin S.C., company celebrates its 40th anniversary, CEO Raymond Conrad says it was the innovations GIS developed for the insurance industry that took the company from providing a commodity in the form of a background report to a provider of technology solutions for corporate employment, security and compliance for a host of other industries.

"...The same technology and expertise that allowed us to streamline data gathering and reporting for insurers has proven applicable for other kinds of businesses as well," Conrad said. "And as business and government are ever more security-conscious, our experience in investigations, fraud detection and statutory and regulatory compliance is invaluable."

GIS says that in 1996 it was the first company to provide a Web-based solution for insurers typically ordering and reviewing up to 30,000 background checks for agents and policy applicants per year. GIS developed a solution that allowed companies to request and review background checks 24-hours-per-day using the Internet, and streamlined the process for managers to review those reports through automated background report grading.

GIS also created an ongoing background check for insurers. The company's Compliance Program Review (CPR) allows companies to ensure that agents and employees remain in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Federal Crime Bill.
