The new IBM Netezza High Capacity Appliance is geared up for analytics across large data sets, with data trend recognition across data sets, analysis of up to 10 petabytes of data in minutes and workload optimization based on IBM’s BladeCenter technology, according to an IBM announcement. The Netezza release is specifically meant to tackle growing data sets from regulatory and compliance requirements in industries such as banking, insurance, health care and communications.
IBM stated the Netezza appliance would join its Hadoop-based BigInsights software and Streams software as part of its overall big data portfolio.
Merv Adrian, research VP in the information management practice at Gartner, says the Netezza release boosts IBM’s analytics portfolio, particularly with capabilities included from the 2009 acquisition of SPSS. Adrian says this release shows a follow-through on the goals of Steve Mills, the senior vice president/group executive of IBM Software.
“Steve Mills’ presence – and his enthusiastic discussion of driving cultural synergy in acquired firms – was a powerful demonstration of IBM’s determination to leverage Netezza’s ability to deliver on the value proposition of appliances [through] simplicity and rapid time to value,” Adrian says.
