IIHS Evaluates Minivan Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted a study to evaluate minivans for safety, awarding those that pass with a “2011 Top Safety Pick” designation.

Five models earned that designation by displaying superior rollover protection: The 2012 Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Volkswagen Routan — which all share a common structure — as well as the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. According to the IIHS, to qualify for the designation vehicles must receive the highest rating for frontal, side, rollover and rear crash protection and must have electronic stability control.

Two models failed to meet these criterions: the Nissan Quest and the Kia Sedona. The Sedona received the lowest rating, poor, while the Quest was rated acceptable.

"Safety-conscious parents shopping for a family hauler should be pleased with today's minivan choices," says David Zuby, the Institute's chief research officer. "At the same time, the ratings show that major differences remain in this segment when it comes to protection in a rollover crash."
