John Hancock Picks New Global Compliance Chief

Kevin Cloherty has been named SVP and Global Compliance Chief for John Hancock Financial, the U.S. division of Manulife Financial Corporation. He succeeds James Gallagher, who was appointed general counsel and chief administrative officer.

Previously, Cloherty had been SVP and deputy global compliance chief to Gallagher. In his new role, he will be responsible for Manulife's compliance activities throughout Canada, Asia and the United States. He will report to Jean-Paul Bisnaire, Manulife's SEVP, corporate development and general counsel, and the audit committee of Manulife's Board.

"Kevin's responsibilities have included serving as advisory counsel to the global compliance community in North America and Asia, as chief counsel to John Hancock's chief compliance officer, and as chief counsel for Manulife's Reinsurance Division and head of its legal team. He has been a valued key advisor to Jim Gallagher, and we congratulate him on his new role," said Bisnaire.

Cloherty joined Manulife and John Hancock in 2005 from Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault LLP, where he was a partner in the litigation practice group specializing in internal investigations and white collar criminal defense.

Previously, Cloherty spent 11 years with the United States Department of Justice, where he was chief of the drug unit in the Boston U.S. Attorney's office and the organized crime drug enforcement task force coordinator for New England, as well as the interim director of the high intensity drug trafficking area for New England. Cloherty is a cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School and a summa cum laude graduate of Tufts University.
