New Data Science Higher Education Programs in 2014

Eight new data science programs have launched or will be starting up in 2014, according to MastersInDataScience.org, a project of Degree Prospects LLC that manages education-focused websites across a range of subject areas and student populations. Here are the new programs:

Indiana University in January 2014 began offering an Online Certificate in Data Science, with a broad curriculum that can be tailored to a student’s interests. The program consists of 12 credits, including cloud computing, data management and data analysis.

University of California, Berkeley in January launched a Master of Information and Data Science program, which gives students the opportunity to prepare for the field of data science through a multidisciplinary curriculum of data collection, analysis and presentation.

Saint Peters University in the fall will begin a Master of Science in Data Science, with a concentration in business analytics, that will aim to prepare students for the field of business analytics. The program’s curriculum will include topics such as decision analysis and optimization, predictive modeling, data mining and visualization.

George Mason University in the fall will launch a Master of Science in Computational Science, offering students a flexible program that lays a foundation in IT and computational science.

University of Chicago, Harris School of Public Policy, in the fall will begin offering a Master of Science in Computational Analysis and Public Policy program. The two-year program will prepare students for leadership positions in the public sector with a foundation in data-driven decision-making.

University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business, in the fall will launch a new Master of Science in Business Analytics, which will prepare students to make effective business decisions using big data.

University of Virginia in the summer of 2014 will begin offering the Master of Science in Data Science, a professional program to prepare students for the use of data analysis in major industries such as health care, business, and science.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall will start up a Master of Science in Data Science, which will offer an interdisciplinary program preparing students to be big data professionals.
