State Farm unveils updated UBI mobile app

State Farm has updated its Drive Safe & Save Mobile application with partner Cambridge Mobile Telematics. The new app is built on CMT’s DriveWell platform, used by several other insurers including State Auto and Plymouth Rock.

Version 3.0 of the Drive Safe & Save app aspires to improve road safety with the reduction of risk while offering financial rewards. Detecting the actions of the drivers automatically though analyzed data collected from smartphone sensors and Bluetooth-based devices, the application creates scores based on acceleration, speed, hard braking and hard cornering. In addition, the application can motion phone usage and distractions, sending feedback to the driver to avoid disturbance.

“Users can now see exactly what driving patterns have affected their performance,” says Scott Bruns, State Farm Director of Telematics Services. “Previously, we were only able to get general information about the entire driving experience.”

Hari Balakrishnan, founder and CTO of CMT shared, “We have worked with State Farm on telematics programs since 2012, and are delighted to bring the latest advances in accurate and battery-efficient mobile sensing, risk assessment, user engagement, and telematics-based services to State Farm customers.”

State Farm didn't return a request for comment by press time. The company has been making more digital investments in recent months, including a blockchain partnership with USAA. It also launched an insurtech venture fund late last year and partnered with IBM Watson.
