Top 10 Safest Driving Cities

Allstate Insurance Co. released its seventh annual “Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report,” ranking cities by which have the safest drivers, and for the second year in a row, Fort Collins, Colo., claims the title of safest city for driving in America.

The report ranks America's 200 largest cities in terms of car collision frequency to identify which cities have the safest drivers, according to Allstate claims data. Collision numbers dictate rating cities based on likelihood of an accident when compared to the national average.

In reclaiming the top spot, Fort Collins drivers are 28.6% less likely to suffer a car collision when compared to the national average. For a driver in that city, the average time between collisions is 14 years, whereas the national average is 10 years. Boise, Idaho slipped into the second spot, while Lincoln, Neb., Chandler, Ariz. and Huntsville, Ala. rounded out the top five.

Drivers in cities with a population over one million are all more likely than the national average to suffer a collision. But some still outshine others, and Phoenix outshines them all, checking in right at the national average with drivers only 1.1% more likely to suffer a collision. San Diego took second and San Antonio took third behind Phoenix.

The report also noted that auto crashes in general have declined over the last few years, yet more than 32,000 crash fatalities are averaged per year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (http://www.nhtsa.gov/).

"Human behavior is the biggest cause of accidents. It is vital for us to educate American drivers about safe driving behaviors they can demonstrate on the road that will help make our roadways safer," said Mike Roche, executive vice president, Allstate's claims organization.
