Top 10 Tornado-prone Areas

The 2011 tornado season has been extremely active and has already surpassed last year’s totals for number of tornadoes (1,282) and damage ($1.1 billion), according to CDS Business Mapping LLC. The provider of RiskMeter Online, a real-time underwriting application based upon mapping technology, announced its list of the top 10 tornado-prone metro-areas (population 50,000 plus).

Based on RiskMeter Online’s Tornado Model, the following areas are most at risk for tornadoes:

1. Denver (Not downtown but a rural area to the northeast)

2. Hialeah, Fla.

3. Miami, Fla.

4. Hollywood, Fla.

5. Aurora, Colo.

6. Houston

7. Commerce City, Colo.

8. Tampa, Fla.

9. St. Petersburg, Fla.

10. North Little Rock, Ark.

“Tornado events will always be a cause of concern for insurers,” said Daniel Munson, founder of RiskMeter Online. “With RiskMeter’s tornado report, users can enter an address and get frequency of tornado events, percentile score which compares the address entered to the rest of the United States, average number of tornadoes for an area and a risk score. This detailed information will provide a much clearer picture of tornado risk, enabling underwriters to assess and price tornado risk more accurately.”
