Liberty Mutual highlighted the importance of AI in the insurer's long-term strategy during the 2026 earnings call Thursday.

Management credited AI as crucial to the many factors that contributed to the company's performance in the second quarter of 2026 — revenue totaling $13.3 billion in the second quarter, up 6% from $12.5 billion during the same period in 2025, and $2.6 billion in net income, up 42.8% from $1.9 billion in the second quarter of 2025.

Altogether, Liberty Mutual attributed this performance to a combination of a more diversified portfolio, disciplined underwriting and consistent operational execution across the organization.

"Artificial intelligence is an important part of that work, but not as a standalone initiative. We are embedding AI into our platforms and workflows to improve underwriting insights, accelerate claims and service processes, and support greater efficiency across functions," said Timothy Sweeney, Liberty Mutual president, CEO and chairman.

"We are scaling deliberately with strong governance, model validation, data protections and human accountability," Sweeney said.

In a previous earnings call for Liberty Mutual's fourth quarter 2025 results, executives shared that a key focus for 2026 was to continue investment in technology and AI capabilities — embedding AI across its platforms, data and analytics to maintain competitive advantage.

Examples include its LibertyGPT model, an internal generative application used by Liberty Mutual employees to summarize information and answer common questions across the organization. In May 2026, the insurer also launched a conversational AI quoting app in ChatGPT that allows users to obtain an auto insurance quote from Liberty Mutual.

"We are encouraged by our recent results and will continue to focus on durable underwriting performance, disciplined capital management and profitable growth over time. The most encouraging aspect of our performance is the breadth and consistency of execution," Sweeney said.
