Fortune Magazine’s list of the
For this “definitive report card on corporate reputations,” Fortune partnered with researcher Hay Group. After selecting approximately 1,400 companies—the Fortune 1,000, non-U.S. companies in Fortune's Global 500, and the top foreign companies operating in the United States—Hay sorted the companies by industry and selected the 15 largest for each international industry and the 10 largest for each U.S. industry, totaling 698 companies. To create the 58 industry lists, Hay asked executives, directors, and analysts to rate companies in their own industry on nine criteria:
innovation, people management, use of assets, social responsibility, management quality, financial soundness, long-term investment, product quality and global competitiveness. A company's score must rank in the top half of its industry survey.
From a list of companies that ranked in the top 25 percent in last year's surveys and those that finished in the top 20 percent of their industry, 3,855 executives, directors and securities analysts were asked to select the 10 companies they admired most.
