Carrier Offers Online Risk, Patient Safety Education to Physicians

Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. - Chicago-based ISMIE Mutual Insurance Co., has become the latest carrier to adopt online education designed to help emergency medical professionals reduce their liability claims.

ISMIE, an Illinois medical liability insurer, will provide its more than 12,000 insured physicians with access to Web-based risk and patient safety education courses developed by Oakbrook Terrace, IL-based The Sullivan Group. These physicians will have access to TSG's "failure to diagnose" curriculum, which helps medical professionals catch diagnoses they might otherwise miss. The courses are based on research of medical literature, review of thousands of medical malpractice cases, the study of adverse patient outcomes, and from morbidity and mortality reviews.

Based on analysis of frequently occurring errors, TSG has tailored its curriculum to focus on the highest-impact content and the most critical topics. The education is continuously updated by medical professionals with the most recently published medical literature to ensure that content is relevant and up-to-date.

Mounting evidence suggests that such online education may help improve profitability of liability insurance. TSG claims its new paradigm in risk reduction and patient safety is helping hundreds of hospital emergency departments reduce their malpractice claims by more than 40%. Its patient safety and risk management system combines Web-based risk and safety education programs, intelligent medical records for physicians and nurses, and an online clinical audit tool to improve medical outcomes.
