CIGNA HealthCare, Hartford, Conn., announced yesterday that it will begin providing online precertification this fall to more than 365,000 physicians in its national network.
The new service will be powered by NaviNet, a multi- payer Web site that provides confidential and protected access to member, plan and patient care information. NaviNet is powered by NaviMedix Inc., a Cambridge, Mass., provider communication portal. CIGNA reports that precertification is the online service most requested by its network providers. Information about eligibility, benefits and claims status for CIGNA HealthCare members is already available at no charge to providers online, through the CIGNA for HealthCare Professionals website and NaviNet. Cigna says this new capability is designed to make it faster and easier for providers across the country to submit and check the status of precertification requests for most inpatient services, certain outpatient services, and injectable medications. Physicians can access the NaviNet-powered precertification services in one of two ways -- either through the CIGNA for HealthCare Professionals website at
