Insurers Rank Among Top IT Places to Work

A number of insurers may continue to be plagued with turnover in their IT departments, but for a chosen few, the IT department is healthy and stable.

The rash of mergers and acquisitions among both IT vendors and insurers begs the question: What makes for a healthy and stable IT department.

From information gleaned from its annual Top 100 Best Places to Work in IT initiative, IDG’s Computerworld notes benefits, competitive salaries, program ownership and other benefits.

The report, issued today, lists United Services Automobile Association (USAA), which provides insurance to some 7 million active and veterans and their families, as earning the top spot on the Best Places to Work in IT list. When asked to share what really matters in the IT area—what makes USAA tick—employees noted generous benefits, bonuses, tuition reimbursement and perhaps more important, overall work environment.

The work environment has innovation, collaboration and service at its core. The insurer’s mobile strategy has already received accolades and its efforts in social media and enterprise systems are well known.

Taking the No. 2 spot is Securian Financial Group Inc., which offers on-site child care, routine recognition of its IT employees and a challenging IT work environment.

Other insurers that made the top 50 include American Fidelity Assurance Co. (11th place), Kaiser Permanente (16th place), Prudential Financial Inc. (17th place) and Principal Financial Group Inc. (31st place).
