New York Life Adds Merdian

New York - New York Life Insurance Co. announced that Craig Merdian has joined New York Life International (NYLI) as executive vice president and chief financial officer. Meridian reports to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of New York Life International Joseph Gilmour.In his new role, Merdian is responsible for managing several core functional areas, including all financial, accounting, investment and actuarial matters for NYLI. Additionally, he is a member of NYLI's Senior Leadership Team, which is responsible for establishing management policies in all areas of the NYLI's business and affairs.

Prior to joining New York Life, Merdian most recently served as vice president within the international insurance business at Newark, N.J.-based Prudential Financial Inc., where he was responsible for pricing and developing the financial structure for mergers and acquisitions. Merdian also served as a principal with Tillinghast business of New York-based Towers Perrin, a consulting firm, for 13 years. In that role, he established a Singapore office, building a life insurance consulting practice with responsibility for leading projects in Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

The news of Meridian's appointment comes weeks after the pronouncement that New York Life added two additional executives. In late August, the company announced Steven Lash had rejoined New York Life as senior vice president in the corporate finance department. Concurrently, New York Life promoted Richard Witterschein to first vice president and treasurer, a position that reports directly to Lash.
