The report benchmarks the mobile apps and websites of 12 U.S. auto and property insurance carriers.

Progressive and Geico were first in overall score for the mobile user experience. Allstate tied with Geico for the top mobile app and was third overall. State Farm was third for its mobile app. Progressive ranked highest for mobile web, Nationwide was second and Geico was third.

Beth Robertson, managing director at Keynova Group, noted that two-thirds of the evaluated carriers offer a telematics solution that includes accident detection, deploying emergency or roadside assistance and 25% now promote accident assistance capabilities to all their policyholders. Half of the carriers can create a claim on behalf of a policyholder.

"All of the carriers reviewed in the scorecard currently offer at least one telematics solution," Robertson told Digital Insurance. "For consumers, these may be oriented towards safe driving or miles driven, and some carriers also offer business telematics tools such as fleet solutions that can monitor a network of drivers and vehicles. Smaller carriers that do not currently have a telematics solution may see them as a competitive necessity either to develop internally or leverage via third parties, or they may choose to partner with connected car providers to develop integrated tools that serve the vehicle manufacturer, the insurer and other relevant providers as well as the driver."

Most of the carriers have mobile photo tools for assessing vehicle damage, and nearly 60% permit policyholders to evaluate property damage using a device's camera. One-quarter of carriers enable digital wallet options and one-third of carriers support claims payments to a digital wallet.

Less than half of the evaluated carriers currently link to their accessibility policy in their mobile apps and one-third provide a digital contact alternative that can be used to report app accessibility issues.

"I was surprised at how few carriers have focused on placing accessibility policies in their apps, which should be an important focus for reducing potential legal risks," Robertson said.
