With $106.427 billion in earned premium in 2012, French insurer AXA S.A. has retained its position as the world’s largest insurer, according to ratings agency A.M. Best. UnitedHealth Group Inc. remained in second, with $99.73 billion in earned premium, an 8.42 percent increase over 2011.
With $88.23 billion in earned premium, Germany’s Allianz SE moved into third, up from fourth in 2011. Italy’s Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A. moved into fourth, up from fifth last year, with $83.4 billion in earned premium; and Japan’s National Mutual Insurance Federal Agricultural Coop increased earned premium by more than 10 percent to $74.14 billion in 2012 to round out the top five.
Earned premiums declined by 5.47 percent to $68.84 billion for Japan Post Insurance Co. Ltd., and the company fell out of the top five.
